Preparing for Winter

In March and April toilet paper disappeared from the shelves and stores were rationing meat. Rice was impossible to find. These issues predominately arose from problems with the global supply chain. We learned then that our interconnected networks of communication and trade were fragile.

Luckily they held.

However, the underlying conditions that caused our supply chains to freeze up have not yet been resolved. In many cases, the economic/political fallout from the virus has made matters worse.

With C-Word cases on the rise across America, the potential for an extremely contested election, and global relations reaching explosive tension, this winter may be one of the most unpredictable winters in our lifetime.

It’s clear to me that we should all seek to have ample amounts of food, water, and emergency supplies on hand for this winter. If you have freezer space, buy some extra meat to store in the freezer. If you’re in an area with little water, store some in a product like WaterBrick. Buy a box or two of freeze-dried emergency food (my favorite is Legacy). And finally, make sure you’ve got a couple emergency blankets/alternative cooking devices/home protection on hand.

Think of this as a deferred shopping list. Hopefully everything resolves to be hunky dory and over the budding spring months of 2021 you can happily munch on your extra food instead of spending money on new groceries!
